On January 31st, 2015, 18 competitors from 7 Eastern states and the District of Columbia arrived in Louisville for the 2015 Eastern Aeropress Championship - #ERAC2015 for short. Hosted by Quills Coffee, we at Prima Coffee were proud to be able to take part in helping arrange and sponsor the event. By the end of the night, it was clear that this was one of the most successful, and most fun regional coffee events the Louisville has ever hosted.
First place winner Chris Heiniger is a Louisville resident, home barista, and home roaster who, naturally, roasted his own winning coffee. His recipe calls for a high coffee to water ratio of 1:9.5, a long steep, and a slightly low brewing temperature. Unconventional as it may sound, all three judges unanimously picked his cup in the final round.
Chris took home an amazing prize pack including a Baratza Virtuoso grinder, an Acaia Pearl scale, Aeropress gear from Able Brewing, and a special Aeropress trophy signed by Alan Adler himself - and he even gets his airfare covered for his trip to Long Beach, CA for the 2015 US Aeropress Championship in February.
Second and third place winners Dmitriy Zhigunov (Williamsburg, VA) and Brian Beyke (Perrysburg, OH) are also notably home baristas, proving that some of the best brews out there can come from the humble kitchens of coffee enthusiasts.
We also owe a big shout-out to our fellow sponsors, whose participation made this event not only possible, but into the huge success it turned out to be:
